In Memory of Madeleine L'Engle

On Sept. 6, 2007 we lost another luminary in the universe of children's literature with the death of Madeleine L'Engle, author of the classic, A Wrinkle in Time, a Newbery Medal winner.  I had the honor of hearing Ms. L'Engle speak twice, once in San Antonio at an Episcopal church and once at the Rutger's One-on-One conference.  I remember her story of being asked why she killed a character in The Arm of the Starfish.  Her answer was that he had to die because that's what happened.  She firmly believed in staying true to her story.  I loved A Wrinkle in Time from the first time I read it at the age of 15 and think that it has stood the test of time admirably.  We are lucky that her works remain with us, but losing her is a great blow indeed.
